Using AI Tools to Improve Your Craft Business

Do you need:

  • more hours in the day?

  • some help figuring out where you can improve things in your craft business?

I have been seeing so much talk of utilising AI tools in the online business space, but very little in the crafting space so I thought it was about time that I did a little bit of research into it, and see how useful they could be for us crafty folks.

5 Ways To Use AI Tools To Improve Your Craft Business

AI tools are changing and improving at rapid pace, it’s a little scary, to be honest. So, I’m not going to go over exactly how to use them, or which ones are the best tools, although I will mention some of my faves, but I will give you some different ways that you can use them to improve your craft business!

I’m still learning and implementing them myself, so I’m by no means an expert, however here are just some of the ways I’ve figured out that I can use them in my business to help me save time, improve, and do the things that I don’t want to do that I think are suitable and pretty easy to pick up for beginners.

Some of the tools I have tried so far include ChatGPT, Rytr, Creative Fabrica, Midjourney, Copy.ai, the AI helper on Notion and Canva but there are loads out there.

ChatGPT is one of the ones I’ve used the most, so I’ve compiled a list of prompts that you can use to improve your craft business - sign up to my email list using the link below to get your free copy!

Info blog posts and ideas

I’ve read so many time that a blog is one of the best ways to get traffic to your website, it contains all those lovely keywords and makes you stand out on Google. But do I have time to come up with blog ideas and write them? I do not.

I’ve played around with this and so far I have found these tools better for idea generation and giving me an outline to work from, rather than completely writing the whole blog post as it does sound very formulaic otherwise.

If you do want AI to create your blog post, however, you can ask for it to give you, for example, 10 ideas for blog posts relating to your niche or the product you are selling. You can then ask it to expand, but do remember to give clear prompts. It will still need tweeking and humanising, with additional relevant information and pictures adding to it as AI tools don’t do all the work for you. But they are a great starting point.

This is also a great tool if you have an email list and are stuck generating ideas of what to say to them, or like me just struggle to find the time to do so!

Designs and patterns

This is probably one of the most fun things for creative people like us!

Whilst I do like creating my own designs, sometimes I want something really specific that I can’t find anywhere and wouldn’t be able to draw very well myself. That is where AI-generated images come in.

Midjourney is probably one of the most popular tools out there currently, and it is very cool, just look at what it can do…

I asked this tool to give me an outline illustration of a fox to use for a decal and it came up with some cool outlines which would work well for stickers. I clicked on the V4 option which gave me drawings looking like pencil outlines then chose my favourite and upscaled it to give me a very clear image.

However, my newest favourite is Vexels, which is specifically if you are someone who makes apparel or has a print on demand business. If you subscribe, you can use their designs commercially and they also have an AI image creator, which should be rolled out this year. I consider their AI creator to be one of the better ones I have seen and it was very quick and easy to create a T-Shirt design.

Creative Fabrica also has a few different sections that allows you to create patterns, PNGs, photos and more. These do take a little bit of trial and error though. I added a prompt to CF Spark Chrystalline which came up with a design, after a little more editing.

You will need to subscribe to download the image, which may also need a bit of cleaning up in Design Space before being ready to use.

Canva also has some cool new features that allows you to edit photos to get them exactly how you want them. One of them is called ‘Text to Design’, which I used in my example.

As you can see, there are lots of options out there to play with. Do bear in mind copyright with AI designs, however, as this is a new area and keep an eye on any updates around commercial licences.

Product descriptions & keywords

Sometimes I want to create a new design and list it on Etsy, but just the sheer work involved in creating a new listing and keywords makes me put it off. AI can help you with that too.

In Creative Fabrica, CF Spark has a whole Etsy section where you can add all the details you need in the Product Description part. The tool will then come up with content ready for you to copy and paste.

You will also find lots of other writing tools in CF Spark.

Rytr also has a product description section where you can add all of your details. You can also select the tone on this one and how many variants you want, where it will give you a couple of different options to choose from.

You can also ask it to come up with a list of keywords - however, I would advise you to do your own research for these as well, as AI tools are probably going to come up with ones that are pretty saturated in your niche.

Content creation plans

If you’re forever running out of ideas about what to post on social media, then AI can also help you come up with content creation plans.

You can ask ChatGPT to come up with a content creation plan. I asked it for 10 titles of TikTok videos I could do for a jewellery business, chose one specific one and then asked it to write me a script for that video. You could also ask it for things like general tips on how to save time ask it for specific ideas of what to make for your specific product business.

Product ideas

When it comes to product ideas it is better to be specific otherwise it can give you quite generic answers, but again, for a starting point, this is a great tool for getting inspiration.

For example, I asked for 10 decal ideas for Halloween which I would happily use and sell.

Another tool you could try is Vexels Quote Generator. For example, if you make T-shirts but just need a specific quote or wording, this is a great tool to use. You could choose a theme, whether the quote is to be short, long, or funny etc. And you can keep on generating until it comes up with something new.

Do be aware of copyrighted quotes here though.

Of course, all of these tools take some learning and playing around with - it’s key that you ask the right questions and give the right prompts to get good quality results. And even then they still may need tweaking and editing - they’re not there to replace you after all, just to help make things quicker and easier. But it’s definitely something I’m going to continue to play with.
