Why Podcasts?
So, as much as I love Youtube for figuring out how to use certain tools, and to get advice from other makers and businesses, podcasts are my go-to when I need a little business motivation or want to do a deep dive into a certain topic.
When I first started my business, I found a few podcasts specifically about running small businesses, social media marketing and selling on Etsy and put them on whenever I was doing design work, in the car and when I was cleaning the house.
And now that I’m more in the thick of running it, I’ll either find ones that are relevant to any specific projects I’m starting or anything I need help with.
Like for instance when I first started thinking about courses, I found a few different online course-focused podcasts - The Online Course Show was the one I listened to the most, and I just looked for specific episodes that I thought could perhaps help me out.
And I also put them on whenever I’m feeling uninspired or a bit down about self-employment or running a business, as listening to other people’s stories always gives me a bit of motivation to keep going. A good one in my opinion should just be like being part of a really interesting conversation with a friend or mentor.
How To Find Ones You Like…
And on that note, I really think it’s important to find podcasts that resonate with you… so there are a few out there that are extremely popular like your Tim Ferris, Gary Vee, Tony Robbins type shows, but I just don’t really enjoy listening to them that much as I can’t relate to them or a lot of the people they interview, but they might be perfect for you.
Just listen to one or two episodes and see if it leaves you inspired and wanting to learn more or not. And there are a TONNE out there, so I would be very surprised if you can’t find one you like.
Also you may want to make sure they’re up to date, as there are a lot of podcasts still out there that haven’t made any new content in a few years. And because of that I can’t really share some of the ones I used to listen to when I was first starting out as they don’t run anymore, and will probably have out of date information.
My 12 Recommendations To Get You Started…
But there are still plenty that are constantly coming out with new and innovative content, so these are just a few you could start with…
I listen to these on either Spotify or the Apple Podcast app, but there are other places you can find them too.
1.The Smart Passive Income Online Business and Blogging Podcast
Bit of a mouthful but worth a listen. Pat was initially very well known for his passive income blog in particular, but this podcast has been running a long time and has become about pretty much all things online business and has a load of great info about marketing and productivity and social media and he has interviewed some really interesting guests, a lot of whom have also built great online businesses.
I just really like Pat’s Ethos and he strikes me as being very honest, and not super ‘hustle’ culture either which I like. He does two a week, one short show about a specific topic and another deeper dive, usually with an interview.
2. The Goal Digger Podcast
Jenna Kutcher hosts this other great all round business show, which is basically just about anything and everything you need to succeed and again has some really inspiring guests. This is one of the ones I listened to a lot when I was first starting out and it’s really easy to scroll through and look for topics that stand out to you.
3. Etsy Success
This isn’t one of my faves as it doesn’t have the best sound quality and it’s a bit information intense, but if you’re new to selling on Etsy and want to figure out the algorithm and what you should be doing to stay on their good side, then this is just a pretty short show that doesn’t post that often so it’s worth checking out, especially if you want to find out something specific.
4. How To Fail
This is one of the most recommended podcasts I’ve seen other business owners talk about… and it’s because failure isn’t discussed enough. We see highly successful people and compare ourselves and what we’re not achieving, but don’t really think about how they got to where they are, and what setbacks they might have had. But listening to this will hopefully remind you to be kinder to yourself. And there have been some super well-known and successful guests interviewed too.
5. Feel Better Love More - Dr Rangan Chatterjee
Speaking of being kinder to yourself, this one isn’t business-related, it’s more focused on health and wellbeing, but actually, I find it super motivational and it's my go-to if I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed and need a bit of a reminder to look after myself. Because after all, you can’t pour from an empty cup!
6. TED Business / TED talks daily
If I need a little bit of inspiration or crave some knowledge, then I love to watch a TED talk on Youtube. And the Ted podcast is great for this too. TED talks daily cover any and every topic so are great for improving your general knowledge, but TED Business is specifically for business, obviously. They are often more relevant for larger businesses and employees, but if you have a scroll there may be some that speak to you.
7. Online Marketing Made Easy - Amy Porterfield
This isn’t actually just about online marketing, it covers pretty much everything business related but Amy is an expert in particular in building email lists, marketing strategy and also online courses if that is something you might want to do in future.
8. On Purpose - Jay Shetty
This one is again not business specific, but is just so good for helping to develop a more positive mindset and Jay, who is an ex monk and full of wisdom himself, also speaks to some very successful people who have some really interesting and thought provoking messages to share. This is another one I listen to when I need a bit of motivation.
9. The Handmade Bosses Show
This is a newer podcast but it has some great info so far specifically about running a handmade business and it has covered some really good topics so far, especially if you’re just starting out.
10. Social Media Secrets with Rachel Pedersen
If you’re on small business Tiktok then you will have no doubt come across Rachel, and she has such great content about how to leverage social media for your business, and her podcast is no different.
And then just a couple of others I have been listening to recently…
11. You’re Wrong About
This is my current obsession and goes into deep dives about all sorts of news stories and urban legends and why we were wrong about them. I just feel like it has really improved my critical thinking skills recently and I’m not just blindly believing everything I read.
12. Radio Headspace…
This is another good one for well being from the meditation app Headspace, they’re just super quick little inspirational reminders to take 5 minutes and be mindful. They also have Sunday Scaries, if you’re someone who gets Sunday evening anxiety about the week ahead.
And then another great way to find new podcasts is usually through podcast guests… a lot of podcast hosts interview each other, so if there is one that particularly captures your attention and the interviewee has their own show, then check them out and they may become your new favourite.
Please let me know in the comments if you have any other recommendations as I love to find new ones!
