What You Need Before You Start Making Or Selling Decals

Check out my brand new bundle for everything you need to get your Cricut business up and running.

So really you don’t need much to sell vinyl decals, other than your cutting machine, vinyl, transfer tape and some envelopes, however in this post I go over some of the things that really help me day to day with making and selling decals efficiently.

Or take a look at my list below (it includes one that isn’t on the video!)…

  1. Vinyl Cutter

I have this Cricut branded vinyl cutter and it has the arm that extends to the side so you can measure your vinyl in order to cut it the right size before you apply it to your mat. I use it every time I use my Cricut as all of my vinyl comes in rolls, and it is super helpful if you do a lot of larger designs with the 24 inch mat.

You could also use a non-branded one, just make sure it has the capacity to cut through vinyl as well as paper. This one is amazing though, I've had it three years and haven't had to replace the blades at all, although it does come with an extra replacement one.

2. Weeding Tool

A weeding tool makes it so much easier to weed your vinyl, especially for smaller designs and if you need to get the bits in between the letters. Some people love to use tweezers, but I’m a big fan of a thin weeder with a plastic handle for gripping.

The one I have is just non-branded and you can get them from lots of different places, as well as in sets like the one below from Amazon…

3. Nail Polish Holder

So I know this seems as if I’ve put it in the wrong category, but I promise you it is an absolute game changer for collecting your weeded vinyl. You just pop it on your hand, pick up your vinyl with your weeding tool from above and then scrape it into the middle, and then once it’s full, it’s super easy to pull out and bin.

And they actually now sell them with this purpose in mind too…

If you don’t fancy wearing one on your hand, there are also versions that stick to your desk…

…although those don’t work for me as it would just get hidden under my messy desk while I’m working!

4. A big bin

I try to not waste too much vinyl or end up with too many scraps, but it's kind of inevitable and they do build-up, so I have a really big bin that I fill up and only empty every few weeks. And because its bigger, it’s easier to squash all of the vinyl down without it sticking to the sides too. So I would definitely recommend that if you have the space.

5. Dedicated Storage

When I first started my business I basically had 0 storage, and everything was in boxes and slotted underneath my desk, but as my business has grown, so have my storage solutions along with it.

So the first thing I bought was this trolley…

Cricut storage trolley

My Cricut fits on top of it so it’s handy for that, but I could also fit all of my vinyl in the drawers when I used to buy smaller rolls. And I still had spaces for order forms and paperwork and I think I probably had some of my envelopes in there at some point too. You can get them from so many different places as well, in all different sizes, colours and with different draw amounts

Now it is just where I have my Cricut and keep vinyl offcuts, and spares, and various other bits and pieces, but if you’re just starting out and have the room, it’s definitely a great thing to invest in.

Because I now have the space, I bought a couple of Kallax units from Ikea and now that is where I keep all of my vinyl and packaging.

And then this was just something we used to have in our kitchen but don’t use anymore, so I repurposed it into a little packing station.

Definitely use what you already have or can get second hand first!

I’d also really recommend getting some hooks or something you can hang your Cricut mats on to keep them out of the way.

These ones are literally the ones you just stick on the wall…

Just make sure you get ones that will definitely hold the weight of however many mats you want to stick up.

You could also hang them on the side of your drawers or storage unit if you want to tuck them out of the way too!

6. Wall Organiser

If you do like sticking things on walls, then you may also want to get a wall organiser - you can either get one with little spaces for packaging (mine from the video kept falling off the wall ☹️ so don’t fill it too full!) or get a magnetic board, a pin board or a one of the peg boards from Ikea that everyone with cool offices seems to have and comes with lots of different attachments.

And use it to keep everything you need to remember on there.

7. Brayer Roller

This one isn’t on the video as it is a more recent purchase of mine, but it is now included in the things I use every day when I’m using my Cricut machine to make vinyl. And I use to roll over my vinyl to help it stick down on my mat, and it pushes all of the air out and helps to get a better cut, especially when my mats aren’t super sticky.

It’s definitely worth trying if you’re finding that your machine isn’t cutting very well, and you’ve tried everything else!

And that’s just a few of the things that I couldn't live without as a vinyl decal seller! If you've got any other suggestions I'd love to hear them please let me know in the comments.
